Salma Mutiara

Bandung, Indonesia

Beneath the facade of perfection lies a world of hidden emotions and inner turmoil. Inspired by my own journey of self-discovery, I delve into the depths of human vulnerability, exploring themes of emptiness, longing, and the struggle for understanding. Many individuals suppress these unsettling emotions, seeking external validation or distractions to fill the void. This can lead to self-destructive behaviors and harm to others. Through art, I aim to give voice to these unspoken feelings, capturing their raw intensity with bold strokes and vibrant colors. By confronting our vulnerabilities, we can embark on a journey of self-awareness and acceptance. My hope is that this artwork will resonate with viewers, encouraging them to embrace their own inner struggles and find solace in the shared human experience

Artist Interview

Q:   Can you share how your artistic journey began? What inspired you to start creating, and how has that initial spark evolved over time?

My artistic journey began as a simple desire for solace. Drawing and painting offered a calming escape from the world's demands, a space where I could lose myself in creativity. As I delved deeper into the world of art, I became fascinated by the power of color. The way a single hue could evoke a myriad of emotions and transform a blank canvas into a vibrant masterpiece captivated me. Initially, I explored traditional mediums, finding joy in the tactile experience of creating art with my hands. However, as I ventured into the digital realm, I discovered a new world of possibilities. Digital art allowed me to experiment with colors, textures, and styles in ways that were previously unimaginable.

For a long time, expressing myself verbally was a challenge. I often found it difficult to articulate my thoughts and feelings, and my intentions were frequently misunderstood. Art, however, provided an outlet for my emotions. Through my creations, I could convey my experiences and perspectives in a way that words alone could not. In the end, my art has become more than just a hobby, it's a part of who I am.

Q:   What have been some of the most significant moments or challenges in your journey as an artist?

My artistic journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences. One of the most significant challenges I've faced has been navigating the art world, especially given my unique style. As an artist who doesn't conform to traditional norms, I've often struggled to find my audience. However, I've persevered, consistently sharing my work online, and I've connected with people who appreciate my unique perspective. Another challenge has been balancing artistic expression with commercial viability.

As an artist, I want to create work that is both visually appealing and emotionally resonant. Sometimes, these two goals can conflict, and I've had to learn to compromise without sacrificing my artistic integrity. One of the most rewarding experiences has been connecting with other artists and art enthusiasts online. These interactions have broadened my perspective and inspired me to push the boundaries of my creativity. Looking back, I'm grateful for every challenge and setback I've encountered. These experiences have shaped me into the artist I am today. I'm excited to see where my artistic journey takes me next.

Q:   If you could offer one piece of advice to other creatives pursuing a career in visual arts, what would it be?

If I could offer one piece of advice to my younger self or to other emerging artists, it would be to embrace your unique voice and don't be afraid to be different. The art world is full of countless voices, and it's important to find your own and let it shine. I wish I had started pursuing my passion for art sooner. Don't wait for the perfect moment, start now, even if it's just a small step. Every day, every stroke, every experiment brings you closer to your artistic goals. Finding your own art style is crucial. Experiment with different techniques and mediums, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Your unique perspective is what sets you apart.

Remember, it's okay to feel lonely or misunderstood as an artist. Keep creating, and your hard work will pay off. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your artistic vision. Your journey may be filled with uncertainties, but with perseverance and passion, you can achieve your dreams.
