Jennifer-Hannigan Green

Michigan, US

Painting is how I process and communicate to the world. My work is my voice for the feelings and emotions I struggle to speak and find words for. But I am more than just a painter. I am a daughter, a wife, a mother, a teacher and even a youth basketball coach. I love to visit new places and learn and see new things. I enjoy being in nature, from listening to the waves at the beach to feeling the wind rustle through the forest. My experiences from these other parts of my life inspire my work, giving me a voice to share and connect with others through my art. The intense emotions of motherhood - love, sleepless nights, connection, the intense emotions of depression and loneliness, and the intense emotions of simply living - finding joy, spirituality and friendship.

Jennifer Hannigan-Green is a figurative abstract painter. Originally, a landscape painter illustrating her walk through nature, Jennifer’s style has changed over the years becoming more simplified and expressive, illustrating her walk through life. Her work shares deep, personal moments. She captures emotional stories through her use of color and shapes. Jennifer has had her paintings shown throughout the world from Paris, France to St. Louis, Missouri and has received the American Art Award two years in a row.

Artist Interview

Q: Can you share how your artistic journey began? What inspired you to start creating, and how has that initial spark evolved over time?

My artistic journey began at my grandparents' kitchen table when I was a little girl. My grandfather and I would sit together and draw. He would talk about art and different drawing techniques. Since then, I have traded my crayons and pencils for paint and paintbrushes. I share my passion for art through my work as well as being an elementary art teacher.

Q: What have been some of the most significant moments or challenges in your journey as an artist?

One of the greatest challenges in my art journey is balance - finding balance to create art while being a wife, mother and teacher. I use these challenges as an inspiration in my work as a way to connect with others who may also experiencing similar struggles.

Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to other creatives pursuing a career in visual arts, what would it be?

Invest in yourself. Do not wait for opportunities to happen. Invest in the time, the skills, and the production. Believe in your worth and make the investment.
